Taiwan’s second largest ethnic group, the Hakka (客家) are a people with a long and troubled history, but you’d be hard pressed to see any evidence of that today - One of the earliest groups to migrate to Taiwan, the Hakka have had the unfortunate luck of being persecuted almost everywhere they’ve settled but here in Taiwan they have found a home where their culture has survived and continues to thrive thanks to the bonds of community that holds together the Hakka ethnic identity which includes a shared language, common values, amazing cuisine, a hard working attitude and most importantly, their hospitality. The word “Hakka” loosely translates as “Guest” and if you are lucky enough to find yourself as a guest in a Hakka home or community, you can count on being treated extremely well and also really well-fed.
